The ability to distinguish a predator from a harmless animal is crucial for survival. Only at the expense of a lot of energy is the snail able to expand its shell. It has to slow down its metabolism and shift into a phase of inertia. Usually the animals bury or hide themselves.

Used in jewelry making, carrying symbolic meanings. First they were pierced or polished and then stringed or pinned on. Small porcelain snails were used for cameo carvings on small rings. Decoration on tools/drums/hoods/dance masks/clothing/armors/parade harnesses of horses.

In many regions the shells were used for jewelry.
Snail and Mussel shells became important symbols in religious rituals. In mythology they were part of superstitious conceptions. Most likely, they were considered as gifts from the ocean that are equipped with supernatural powers. They were also considered to have magical powers. This added a spiritual dimension. Shamans and sorcerers used them in rituals, in order to bring rain, heal diseases, ask for fertility and abundant harvest, or to curse enemies.
The Cowrie is a particularly well-known example of a shell that was given symbolic meaning in various cults and creeds because of its shape. The small opening on the underside of the Cowrie snail is suggestive of the female genital/considered the symbol of female fertility. As the benefactor of life it was attributed with magical powers.
Tibet: used in the treatment of benign or malignant tumors of any kind.

Maori women: headbands made of Cowries before giving birth to their first child.
Even today, in the South of Italy, some girls wear necklaces made of Cowries as amulets against infertility and venereal diseases. The Romans called this snail Concha veneris.
China: a guarantee for the continuation of life and good food for the dead in the hereafter (put in the mouth behind the last molars)
Zaire: symbol for royal status.
Salomon islands: attached to the bow of war canoes in order to give them power and protection through their magic.
