Because foods can also be classified as the seven metals, one may change one's diet so as to reduce foods that are harmful for you and increase your use of more helpful foods.

This applies generally, not just to considerations of which foods might be rich in certain metals.

Ferrum (Mars)

A person who has excess Iron is hard, strong, active and assertive - an 'Iron Man'. It is the masculine metal that will fight or argue if pushed, or even without pushing. They make decisions quickly, they speak abruptly and forthrightly, they move quickly and are always busy, moving on to new things. They gravitate naturally to military, metal-working, butchering and police matters where they find others of their own kind and a job they thoroughly enjoy. They think on the hoof, rarely reflecting on what they do. They are activity centred, spending most of their time fully occupied. They like sports of all kinds. Many business people fall also into this category. They are accused of being hard, selfish and aggressive. Some incline to violence or criminality. Iron is softened, domesticated and improved with silver, copper or gold. The iron type needs to be less assertive and more kind, needs to be mellowed and made more passive and receptive to others' needs. Nux-v. and Coff. types abound here. Also Sulp/Ferr-met.

            Cuprum

Bel-p.). In Venen- (Venen = Venus/Ham.)

People with an excess of Copper, like venus, are mild and artistic, goes with the flow, creates harmony, will never upset others needlessly. It is prominent in artists of all kinds; they like sweet things, sloppy films. Like silver people, with whom they match very well, they are inspired, poetic and romantic. The copper type has the needs of others just as clearly in mind as their own. They are kind, deep, generous and warm-hearted. They like their creature comforts, food, etc and a romantic life. Copper people love life and people; they love to socialise and mix with others. They have strong family ties and the presence and companionship of friends and family are very important to them. jobs like designers, film-makers, artists, actors, musicians. The copper type needs to develop more confidence, more

structure, more strength, more grit. Copper can be strengthened either with iron or lead. Puls is a key remedy

            Plumbum

Persons with an excess of Lead are dark and heavy, rather sombre or gloomy, rather depressed or maybe a control-freak; 'don't touch that, it's mine!, etc. They like coffee, dark clothes, winter, night-time and gloomy or highly structured music. They tend to be rather conservative and love structure and strict time guidelines, etc. They can be uptight and intolerant especially of interference from others, which they dislike. They are often too wrapped up in themselves to bother much about others. They fail to see how others can't also lead a strict and orderly life. They tend to be very serious, to think too much and to dwell in the past. Jobs like architects, bankers, accountants, solicitors. They are rather conservative and set in their ways. They dislike change and upset of any kind. Interested in politics. The lead

type needs to loosen up a bit and develop more spontaneous joy. It is chiefly mellowed and improved through gold, copper, tin or silver. Close remedies are Calc. Plb-met. Alum and Lyc.

            Stann-met.

Tin people are the theorizers; even when there is nothing to think about; they like to speculate, maybe gamble a little, a flutter on the horses is not beyond them; they also like travel and long journeys abroad. They might be accused of having a suspicious mind and of seeing things that aren't there. Their love of theories comes from their ability to clearly see patterns in events and data. These patterns are often not visible to others. From these patterns and trends they build up theories to explain the world around them. They are natural philosophers. They often have a well developed sense of humour. Tin types need to develop more action and less thought, to live less in themselves and more in the outer world. It is the inquisitiveness, expansiveness and growth tendency of jupiter that makes tin people so obsessed with patterns and information. They tend to be excessive and obsessive in the things they do. This also stems from their great natural enthusiasm. jobs like university and college lecturers, philosophers, bishops, clergy, professors, travel agents. Tin can be livened up a little with iron, made more artistic with silver or copper and deepened with lead. Chel and other liver remedies are associated with Tin.

            Mercurius

Mercury is the chatterbox, ceaselessly talking and gossiping, sometimes harmlessly, sometimes bitchily. Mercury makes a good messenger, diplomat or go-between, yet they can be two-faced and cannot keep a secret! They appear as all things to all people, somewhat promiscuous in every sense and rather changeable. they love books, letters, newspapers, magazines, journals, correspondence, reading, writing, telephones, crosswords, languages, jobs like teachers and writers, servants, doctors, diplomats, entertainers, Merc. Tub. Cann-i. and Stram. are related remedies.

            Argentum

Ange-a.).

Silver is the sensitive metal of the emotions and the more refined senses. Maybe they are clairvoyant or just oversensitive; they like to be treated kindly and will not tolerate any roughness. They do not get on with iron types, for example, who they find far too rough and insensitive. Like copper they have a fine artistic sense and prefer family and friends most. The lunar silver type is the most caring and compassionate of all the metals; They like people and want to mother them and care for them. In this sense they are the archetypal feminine type. People with excess silver may find life rather painful and constantly on an emotional roller-coaster, as they react to negative and positive things so intensely and with powerful emotion. They need to develop some lead or iron to harden and protect them

from the harsh realities of life, by reducing the intensity of their emotional response. mothers, childminders, nannies, nurses, teachers. Arg-mur. Puls. and Ign. are related to the Silver type of person.

            Aurum

Theriak (Engelwurz), Aquavit (Hyper. Rosm.). Frenette (sucre/Lup./Cich./Ac-tart/Frax). Melissengeist (Ange-a. Cori.).

Gold is king, proud, refined and naturally superior. Vain, arrogant and somewhat haughty, the type is nevertheless very warm-hearted and kind. Once you get past the vanity, you see that they are kind givers who love to throw parties and splash out on big shows. They are music lovers (opera). They make loyal friends, and though intent on big schemes, will always help others in need. Gold people succeed very easily and are gifted as natural winners; they come top, come first, get the gold medals, strive to win or win without even trying; they can be proud, aloof, smiling, aim to succeed, become famous; kings, queens, bosses, directors, music lovers, etc. Remedies like Aur-met. Plat.

To utilise metal therapy directly, you need to search through your life and identify all those qualities that mark you out as being lead, tin or silver, say. By checking your likes and dislikes for example, you can eventually narrow this down. In this way you will eventually discover your own unique metallic blend. You can build up through a few days thinking a quite complete profile of yourself in relation to the qualities of the 7 metals. This is quite easy. You just set yourself a questionnaire about colour and food preferences, etc. Then you can determine where your metallic strengths and weaknesses lie. The end-goal is to restore the metallic balance and acquire a more even blend which likewise promotes a balance in health and well-being.

There is a very accurate but complex astrological method for determining the precise blend of metals in one's make-up and for showing in numerical terms which metals are strongest and weakest in one's make-up.

3 outcomes:

1st: an even blend of all the metals and no problems in life.

2nd: several metals even, with one or more deficient/it is those deficient one's that you need to boost further.

3rd: you have all the metals even but one or more standing out as having a much higher score. This indicates that you have an excess of this one metal in your life. To reduce its effect upon you, you need to push it further away from you by discarding all colours etc that relate to it and adopt qualities, colours, etc, that are its opposite. This will neutralise its overall effect and restore the balance.

One's life contains two distinct kinds of 'metallic' things. There are things you like and have by virtue of a metal excess, and there are those that you have due to a metal deficiency. You must search for both. If you like blacks and dark blues, sleep easily, but are hard to rouse and lack energy then you have a clear excess of lead. But you may also feel brightened by reds, which is your second favourite colour. This indicates a lack of iron. Thus this person should reduce the lead in their life and heighten the iron. By making this kind of adjustment, they can compensate for the lack of one and excess of another. They will lose their tiredness and gain a more positive outlook, just through making quite subtle changes to the contents of their life.

As a general rule, men need to cultivate more silver or copper to tone down their mars, and women need to develop more lead or iron to balance their copper and silver.

It is well to bear in mind that although we all contain aspects of all the metals, nevertheless, one or more will tend to be dominant (in excess or deficient) in any one person.

Rationale

In a sense 'as above so below' the heart in the body is seen in alchemy as equivalent to the gold of the earth and the sun of the heavens; brain of the body as silver in the earth and moon in the heavens; nerves and lungs of the body as mercury in the rocks and mercury in the heavens, etc. The reasoning behind these close correspondences is that they share similar qualities and resonate with each other on many different levels.

A link is thereby established and repeatedly emphasised between man, the earth-bound metals and the wider cosmos. In alchemy this link is seen as vital for gaining any fundamental grasp of our nature, disharmonies in the body, the earth or the cosmos. All are seen as intimately and inextricably interconnected. By identifying deficiencies in one realm, one can then apply the appropriate change or re-tuning through the organ, metal or planet that corresponds. In this way adjustments can be made in any realm and the harmony of interrelationships that constitutes 'man-earth-cosmos' can be re-established.

It is inherent in this view of life, that any imbalance in the cosmos which has become imprinted in your makeup will inevitably manifest as an imbalance within your life, often as disease. The imbalance may lead you inexplicably and intuitively to favour a particular food, colour, plant, metal, etc over others. By searching through these like and dislike patterns in your life, you can begin to express that imbalance in terms of the 7 metals. And then you can begin to deal with it.

This interrelationship means, amongst other things, that we uncontrollably attract into our life that which is helpful or useful to us and which reflects our inner nature. This includes people, relatives and friends, as well as objects, plants, pets, etc. The inner and the outer natures cooperate, reflect and reinforce each other. Yet also, through the polarity principle, we can attract that which is the exact opposite. To some extent this is why we can become ill from the very thing that will heal us and be healed by that which makes us unwell - contraries and similars being to this degree convergent. It also means we can attract into our lives the very things that cause us ill-health. Yet, as Louise Hay and Edward Bach both indicate in their little books, it is through developing love (self-love) that we can begin to liberate ourselves from the negative in our life - which is perhaps the ultimate healing.

A simple example of alchemical re-tuning would be to wear a tin or orange bracelet if a person was prone to liver problems. Kidney complaints could be improved by 'bringing copper more intimately into your life'; nerve disorders through bringing silver; heart through bringing gold, etc. This sounds deceptively simplistic, but it conveys the essence of a profound teaching and its ordinary application in our everyday life. Of course, the world is very complex and we must also take into account not only the 7 metals, but also certain plants, minerals and animals, incl. homoeopathic remedies, as long as they are viewed or classified as 'aspects of the 7 metals' and thus used as agents of natural healing.

Many other methods exist. One might just place in one's home or garden the metal or a mineral, plant or animal that corresponds and fill that 'gap in one's life' in that way.

If, for example, it turns out that you are an excessively 'lead or saturn type' person, then you can reduce or eliminate the wearing of blacks and blues, stop eating black cherries and drinking coffee, and start using brighter colours and eating other foods. If however, you have a deficiency of saturn-lead, then you would take the reverse steps, and bring this metal much more into the forefront of your life by so doing. Through simple and harmless experimentation of this kind one can come to test the usefulness of these ideas very easily and maybe come to know profound truths.

Thus the phrase 'bringing some metal more into your life' can be interpreted in many different ways, each having the potential of bringing about the desired healing effect. So it does not just mean the metal - it means the archetype the metal has come to represent. It may mean a colour, a metal, a herb, a food, a crystal or an animal. Once one's metallic deficiency or excess - or what we might term one's 'simillimum metallicum' - has been identified, then one can explore different ways of bringing that metal into your life and adjusting and exploring the right intensity or dosage of one's intimacy with it. The essence can be placed under one's bed, made into a pillow, put in your bath, placed on the tongue, held in one's hand, sewn into clothes, incorporated into a bodily ornament or piece of jewellery, used as a lotion or ointment, or as tablets in the mouth, etc. The possibilities here are endlessly.

One might meditate upon a certain colour, metal or flower, immerse oneself in a certain phrase or poem that encapsulates the quality one seeks to acquire. These might include acquiring a cat (gold), dog (mars), fish (tin), tortoise (lead) or horse (tin) as a pet, wearing a certain colour more often, placing of crystals upon one's body or the use of Flower essences or essential oils.

Lunge in Zwillinge.

Because foods can also be classified as the seven metals, one may change one's diet so as to reduce foods that are harmful for you and increase your use of more helpful foods. This applies generally, not just to considerations of which foods might be rich in which metals. Some food correspondences are shown:

Venus + Mars

- Abkochung in Wein einnehmen, also Dekokt ( wird häufig empfohlen)

- Schweineschmalzsalbe- Essigauszug an Reflexzonen.

ASTROLOGY OF THE ELEMENTS

by Peter Morrell

Earth Signs

I do not regard them as essentially practical people per se! I think they are more correctly 'worldly' as shown by the main interests of the 2nd, 6th and 10th houses: money/craft/career/status/politics. All are essentially worldly matters connected to matter and the material aspects of our lives. Earth sign people live out there in the world and involve themselves predominantly in worldly things. Craft people/artisans/ordinary workers/politicians/big business moguls.

Earth and fire centred primarily in the outer world; air and water centred much more in themselves/in human beings/relationships. The engagement of earth signs with money, with job of work, with politics and status are all worldly matters. There also appears to be a problem with Mercury and Venus, both being rulers of earth and of air signs. Being in earth, Mercury seems to create a Virgo gloss over things and with an essentially masculine vibe. Venus in air seems to give a basically Libra feel and also a feminine gloss.

I think it is very interesting that women generally tend to have a Venus in air orientation with love of networking and friendships, neat bedrooms and cosy chats. They are much more Libra than men are. They are orientated in social relationships and cosy firesides, like a strong Cancer vibe there too. What is also apparent here is that fire and earth are somewhat masculine and are centred much more in the external world, as men patently are; and that women as air and water, are so oriented in human relationships and feelings. I think this is a superb summary of what happens in reality. Though there are exceptions, but as a rule, I think these things are true, i.e. broadly observable.

Elements

Lately, I have been thinking about the combos of the elements and this is really amazing stuff, which seems to unlock the mysteries of so many charts. For example fire and water. Well, fire and water not mixing is a bit of an old chestnut. What it really shows is emotional volatility pure and simple. Thus, where a water sign rises [equals water fire overlay] or where any water planet is in a fire sign [less so BTW with fire planets in water signs for some weird reason] then out comes the emotional instability and volatile nature. Typical examples are Moon in Aries, Leo or sag, which all give a very fiery temper, emotional zeal and great impatience, very short fuse: whoosh up they go like a fire rocket! They anger easily but recover quickly too. There is a very swift emotional response to events. The key points are speed of reaction plus emotions.

Another good example is Jupiter in Scorpio, or Jupiter in Pisces but the difference with the fire planet in the water sign is that it comes out as sensitivity and sulkiness rather than the whoosh fire rocket! The speed and energy of the fire planet is slightly muted in a water sign. It slows it down. As if the SIGN determines the outcome character but the planet gives the energy. I have Pluto in Leo and Moon in Aries, plus Moon’s node in Aries too and Jupiter in Pisces. This all gives emotional volatility IMHO. My mother had a Sun Mars conjunction in Pisces and though generally steady, could ‘go up’ on occasions.

Another good example is the earth-fire versus water-air polarity. The old idea that earth goes with water and fire with air is not so insightful. Water with air is a mix of thought and emotion and these are essentially internal dreamers and sensitive thinkers thus all artists, musicians and poets, etc. They think and feel all the time. By contrast, the earth fire types mix energy and matter and that gives machines, doers, and active people of all types. Fred Dibnah is a good example. It is a perfect account of females and males in that order. The earth-fire types are rooted in the outer world, in matter and energy, action and achievement while ‘females’ are the internalised thinkers and feelers.

Fire earth combo are doers and masculine and centred out there in the ‘real world’ [they combine matter and energy and are assertive] as opposed to water-air types who are much more centred in their thoughts and feeling responses to the world. Thus, they are more sensitive artistic types. Fire earth types do not have much going on in terms of thoughts and feelings. They avoid them. They are rooted in and happy with matter and energy. It is like men who like fast cars and football - matter and energy.

FIRE sign overlay emphasises ACTION and 1 5 and 9 houses; Fire also emphasises Sun Jupiter and Mars. A fire chart must contain an overall emphasis of fire signs and fire planets. In fire charts all of the fire planets, and their houses, are accentuated in power. fire signs related to energy, activity, achievement and action.

WATER sign overlay emphasises FEELINGS and 4 8 and 12 houses; Water also emphasises Moon Pluto and Neptune. A water chart must contain an overall emphasis of water signs and planets and houses. In water charts ALL the water planets, and their houses, are accentuated in power. water signs related to feelings;

EARTH sign overlay emphasises PRACTICALITY and 2 6 and 10 houses; Earth also emphasises Venus, Mercury and Saturn. In earth charts, all the earth planets, and their houses, are accentuated in power. Linked to matter and substance/jobs/crafts/money;

AIR signs overlay emphasises MENTALITY and 3 7 and 11 houses; Air also emphasises Mercury, Venus and Uranus. In air charts all the air planets and their houses are accentuated in power. air signs related to thought, ideas and sociality;

The influence of any planet is accentuated if it resides in the Sun’s house; e.g. the position of Mars in the 4th house has a special power if the Sun sign is Cancer. The position of a planet in the Sun’s house acts just like it being in the same sign as the Sun or even in conjunction with it. It is thus automatically augmented by any good aspects from other planets to the sun also.

The Moon’s influence is especially important if the Sun is in Cancer or if there are several planets in the 4th house, or if Cancer is in the ascendant. In such a situation the character of the Moon will be greatly influenced by the sign it is in. It will be ‘tinted’ by the character of the sign and this will very much affect the mentality and emotionality of the person. This theme can be repeated for all planets and their corresponding houses and ruling planets. A Mercury Mars conjunction in Pisces is very different from a Mercury Mars conjunction in Leo. Likewise, it ‘comes out’ differently if such an aspect is in the 3rd house compared with being in the 6th.

Thus, wherever in the chart such planets and their signs appear, that is where action, feelings, practicality and mentality will, chiefly, be focused in the person's life. In addition, that gives rise to a lot of blending.

However, the location of planets in houses also shows in some charts where the energy is located and what overlay or overlays are most active. In charts where planets are mostly in water signs; and in which Moon, Pluto and Neptune are forming most of the aspects, feelings will be the main focus. Likewise, in those charts with fire signs mostly occupied and aspects between Mars, Sun and Jupiter predominating, then in such people action is the main focus. Most people are blends of these features, having a mix of such influences.

It is also important to observe the amount of each element in the chart as that gives clues to the mentality and life pattern. In a fundamentally water type of chart the aspects to the water planets are certainly the most important and have precedence over all other aspects. In a ‘fire chart’, all aspects to the fire planets take precedence over all other aspects. Likewise, in a predominantly air chart only the air signs and air planets need to be considered in delineating huge areas of the mentality and life pattern. Thus from considerations of this kind, a lot of sense can be made of a chart just through considering the elemental bias the chart seems to contain. For example, a chart with a water sign rising and prominent water planets can be considered a ‘water chart’.

A ‘water chart’ can also be defined by planets mainly occupying water houses, regardless of what signs they are in. Likewise, a water chart can be defined as a chart with most aspects to the water planets. From weighing up all the features in a chart based on their elemental status, we can proceed in this way to determine the precise elemental bias of the chart as a whole. On such a basis, it can be shown what type a person is born at a certain time. Based upon that, it then becomes possible to make certain observations about the likely conduct, responses and interests of such a person.

The conflict of resolution with any chart concerns how we decide where the events will be located. It seems that planets and signs represent energies, which are then anchored into the events of a life by the house locations. In this sense, therefore, the planets, signs and aspects represent innate impulses and the houses where those impulses will become manifest in subject and where they will erupt, or be expressed, into areas of activity and focus within the life of the individual. Thus, the houses and cusps are very critical in delineating the actual areas of focus where theses energies within the chart will break through into real manifestation in life events. They comprise the unique aspect of a person’s individuality because they are determined not by day of birth, but by the actual moment.

Thus, all planetary positions can be translated into the chart overlay concept.

If we look at any chart, where Sun, Mars and Jupiter appear that shows where the main *actions* of that person’s life will tend to be found and become manifest; likewise houses 1 5 and 9 and the cardinal houses 1th, 4th, 7th and 10th. For emotions, we should check Moon, Neptune and Pluto. If Moon is in Cancer Taurus or Libra then it gives great calm and charm compared to it being in a more aggressive and volatile fire sign, for example. The reactions in arise are explosive and emotional and melodramatic with intense feelings. The character of the feelings is also determined as about action and achievement when in the fire signs. In earth, about practical matters, in air about thoughts, ideas and people, etc.

Wherever Mercury Venus and Saturn are found the practical earthy matters will be focused in the chart, while the position of Venus Mercury and Uranus delineate the thoughts ideas and sociality. However, these planets also determine the earth features. It is chiefly Uranus for air and Saturn for earth which distinguish betwen air and earth qualities in a chart, as they are the only planets that separate a focus upon the two elements, above all others, apart from house positions.

The power of any planet in a fire house, will be enhanced especially if it is a fire planet and especially if it is the same house as the Sun sign. Any planet in the same house of the Sun is enhanced in power. My Jupiter in 3rd covers the Gemini Sun, thus giving a blending of influences that is the clear equivalent of a Sun Jupiter conjunction in Gemini.

The elements also indicate the sphere of activity; for example water signs, houses and planets show the emotional responses we make to the world; earth show matter and practical worldly affairs; fire show where energy will be focused in actions and achievement orientation, and air show where communication, relationships and humanity will manifest. Thus the positive signs tend to show outlets into the world from the individual [communication, relationships and actions], while the negative signs and houses show where movement occurs inwards from the world into the individual [emotional and practical].

Air signs are nimble, swift and active thinkers and idealists; they are dreamers, liberal humanists. I think they are more dreamy than water signs, in a sense, but it is mental dreams rather than emotional dreams. Lennon is a classic archetype with Sun in Libra and Moon in Aquarius plus Aries asc thus air signs are on the air houses. This reinforces the air-fire overlay emphasising thought and action.

John Lennon provides an excellent archetype of a typical air type person; he had Sun in Libra in the 7th and Moon in Aquarius opposition Pluto, thus we have the air sign and justice and also the emotionality of a Moon Pluto opp’n. The air nature of planets and signs is helpfully reinforced through having a fire sign ascendant as it places an air sign on every air house.

It then behoves us to consider what might be the ‘best’ asc for different signs. If we wish to emphasise the water quality for a water Sun sign then clearly a fire asc would be best as it places water signs on the 4, 8 and 12 water houses. Alternatively, a water sign on the asc would place a water sign on the active fire house cusps 1 5 and 9. Another possibility is for the earth sign asc which would place the water signs on the expressive and intelligent air sign cusps of 3 7 and 11. We can repeat this exercise for signs of each of the four elements and thus search out what each overlay would produce for signs of each element. The worst sign clashes and will be air-water perhaps or fire-earth, where some discord seems likely. The emotions of the water, arguably holds the fire sign back. The air sign cools the emotion of the water sign.

It means that every aspect and planet can be viewed as an aspect of the elements. Thus, all aspects and sign/house placements of Moon Neptune and Pluto generate emotions, and are so linked thereto.

With regard to actions look at Mars, Sun and Jupiter [Aries, Leo Sag and 1 5 9], for emotion check Moon, Pluto and Neptune [Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, 4 8 and 12]; for intelligence check Mercury, Venus and Uranus [Gemini, Libra, Aquarius, 3, 7 and 11]; for practicality check Venus Mercury and Saturn [Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, 2, 6, and 10].

Thus, a water sign rising must be broadly similar to earth signs rising. e.g. Pisces asc places water on all fire cusps - Cancer on 5th and Scorpio on 9th. With Taurus asc Leo is on 4th, Sag on the 8th and Aries on the 12th cusp; thus earth signs asc gives water on the fire cusps while water sign rising gives water on the fire. Thus, these BOTH lead to activation and blending of fire and water throughout the chart overlays. Thus, there is a sort of water-fire reciprocation between earth ascendants and water ascendants.

In a similar way, when the air element falls on the fire cusps [i.e. air is rising] is rather similar to having fire on the air cusps. The latter happens when air is rising. Thus, there is reciprocation between fire and air. Thus, we can depict air-fire charts and water-earth charts. However, blendings occur so fire-water and fire-earth, air-water and air-earth are also possible. Based upon elements, water-fire is an incompatible combination. Emotion holds back the ‘man of action’, while excess action ‘upsets’ the emotional water sign. Yet we all contain particles of this blend.

In ‘fire charts’ all those planets in fire houses and signs as well as the fire planets themselves, are greatly accentuated in power. Their power and influence takes precedence over all other features of the chart. The fire planets in fire charts are usually the most powerful.

In a ‘water chart’, all those planets in the water houses and signs and the water planets are greatly accentuated in power. Their power and influence takes precedence over all other features of the chart. The water planets in a water chart are usually the most powerful.

In an ‘air chart’ all those planets in air houses and signs plus the air planets are greatly enhanced in power. Their power and influence takes precedence over all other features of the chart. The air planets in an air chart are usually the most powerful. In an air chart Uranus takes precedence, as it is the main planet distinguishing air from earth. It is thus a ‘decider planet’ in the chart. [Mercury and Venus are shared by earth and air signs].

In an ‘earth chart’ all those planets in earth houses and signs plus the earth planets are greatly accentuated in power and take precedence over all other features of the chart. The earth planets in an earth chart are usually the most powerful. In an earth chart Saturn takes precedence, as it is the main planet distinguishing air from earth. It is thus a ‘decider planet’ in the chart. [Mercury and Venus are shared by earth and air signs].

Air and fire planets are naturally in opposition and thus oppositions between them especially in air or fire charts are negligible in importance.

In water and earth charts, oppositions between their planets are natural and thus such figures in such charts are of no importance.

I noticed that Mars in Cancer and Moon in Aries, for example, are similar but then said that Mars in Cancer seems less volatile and melodramatic than the very effervescent Moon in Aries. Well, I think the reason is the at the 'soft and gentle light of the Moon', if I can speak in such terms, is considerably reddened and roughened by passing through the Aries filter, BUT the aggressive red light of Mars is considerably softened and muted by the warmth of Cancer. Thus, the result, though similar is also distinctly different. Both have ‘family problems’ as a generic term, but their emotional behaviour will be different; the former volatile, the latter warmer and moe sensitive. Both will enjoy the thrill of speed racing and ‘water sports’.

What is also apparent is that although the planet and the sign blend to form a mixture of both in the outcome, yet the sign seems to modulate the energy of the planet - it acts as a final filter which modifies the energy and colour of the planet. The planet's original energy and qualities may be greatly modified according to which sign it is in. For example, you cannot really compare Mars in Aries to a Mars in Capricorn. The quality of the Mars in both is quite different. One is very aggressive while the other is very ambitious. But BOTH have great energy and dedication to getting things done quick; both are determined and active. The Mars in Capricorn is far more thorough and methodical, far deeper and more planned and patient than a Mars in Aries could ever be.

combos or blendings:

Fire air - action and intelligence; intelligent action e.g. Mars in Aquarius or Mercury in Virgo; there is a blending of communication, humanity and relationships within an aura of activity typical of fire. A sense of achievement comes to them via their intellect, humanity and ideas, and through sociality.

Fire earth - action and practicality; practical organised actions; e.g. Mars in Capricorn; Jupiter in Virgo; there is a masculinity and a blending of money, career and status within an aura of action typical of fire; fire activates the practical. As previously noted, this blend creates machines of men and men of machines a blend of energy and substance. A great sense of achievement and action comes to such a person through worldly matters, practical affairs and substance.

Fire water - active emotion; emotive action; e.g. Mars in Scorpio, Jupiter in Pisces; there is a blending of all emotions with practicality; thus practical emotions and emotional practicality. There is a great speed and volatility of all emotions. They are expressed suddenly, quickly and forcefully. A sense of achievement comes to such people through their emotions and feelings. Also an emotional attachment to any practical affairs; e.g., sport and activity. The emotions also have an active impact or force to them.

Earth air - practical dreams; dreamy practices; e.g. Venus in Aquarius, Saturn in Gemini; there is a blending of practicality with communication, career and status; dreams become made in reality! Intelligence and practicality combine; also intelligence about worldly matters. Brilliance, intelligence re skills and talents.

Earth water - emotional practicality; practical emotions; e.g. Moon in Taurus, Pluto in Virgo; there is a blending of the practical and the emotional; dreams become a reality. Exceptional practical skills. Artistic talents.

Water air - emotional intelligence; intelligent emotions; humane affections; e.g. Moon in Libra, Neptune in Aquarius; emotions blend with the intelligent; communication of emotion; emotion in relationships and also humane feelings for all persons, compassion, all become activated. Dreams become emotively expressed. Emotional attachment to thoughts and ideas, or to social life. Also, emotionally felt thoughts and ideas. There is a thorough blending of thoughts and feelings, such that things thought have feeling; things felt have thoughts. This type of person has the best blend of internal sensitivities which can enable them to become great artists, writers and musicians.

In relation to the signs, I begin to reckon that Cardinal are assertive and represent the basic Will; Fixed signs are more obstructive and resistive of change and more properly represent memory; and that Mutable signs represent swift and nimble, adaptive intelligence and the sensory apparatus, constantly absorbing sensations and making observations, which are fed to the fixed signs and retained for storage.

Based upon that it means that Aries is a sign of assertive action;

Cancer is a sign of assertive emotion;

Libra is a sign of assertive thoughts and sociality; and

Capricorn is a sign of assertive matter, substance and politics.

Likewise, Taurus represents an earthy form of memory; Leo a musical and luminous aspect of memory; Scorpio the emotive aspect of memory and Aquarius the wider social, intelligent, and intellectual side of memory.

Examples of all the combos:

Air-fire Sun Jupiter or Mars in Gemini Libra or Aquarius; Venus, Mercury or Uranus in Aries, Leo or sag; Sun Jupiter and Mars in conjunctions with Mercury Venus or Uranus; all combos across 3rd 7th and 11 th houses with 1 5 and 9

Summary

In the final analysis there is no such thing as a fire chart or an air chart, etc. We are all mixtures of all types of blends. But the meaning of saying ‘air chart’ or ‘fire chart’ really centres upon the influence in the person of what fire or air really means. Thus a chart with a lot of air will produce a strong mentality with thoughts and ideas, relationships and intelligence being a dominant aspect of the person’s life. Emotion and action and practicality will also be present, of course, to varying degrees. Likewise, in a predominantly water chart there will be emotional matters forming the main focus of the life and development. Other topics will also be important, including action and relationships, and practical affairs, but the central pillar of the life and personality will always revolve around and come back to emotions and feelings.

Thus to talk of air, fire, water and earth in astrology is really to talk of the degree to which mentality, sociality, action, feelings and worldly concerns are important and central, or really rather peripheral, placed centrally or to the margins, in a person’s life. Those charts in which there is a strong dominance of one element or another, will revolve around that as their hub, while other less dominant features will get pushed out to the periphery as less important themes or of little interest to the person. A good example we have examined is the ‘earth-fire person’, usually a man, who is mostly interested in a job of physical work, beer and football, fast cars and loose women. Nothing much else matters to such a person, as air and water are only feebly developed in their chart and thus inevitably, intellect and feelings are of no concern to them. In such a person they are dominated by fire and earth and thus nothing much else gets a look in.

Thus to check on the emotions check the water signs, houses and planets; to check on the worldliness, check out the earth signs, planets and houses; to check on the mentality and sociality check out the air signs, planets and houses; and to check on the action and sense of achievement, check the fire signs, fire planets and their houses.

MEDICAL ASTROLOGY AND ASTROLOGICAL MEDICINE

by Peter Morrell

Astrology as applied to medicine has very ancient roots (India/China/Egypt/Europe in the late medieval and early modern periods, c1450-1700. No exaggeration is to say that astrology dominated everything during that period and thus many systems of knowledge depended upon it, were symbiotic with it, or made reference to it in their worldview. In the case of medicine, astrologers assigned signs of the zodiac to rule over parts of the body, planets to rule over organs and systems, and planets to rule over diseases and drugs. Thus the whole system is one of observation and interpretation based upon a complex system of given Rulerships.

Planets:

Briefly the organs of the body are ruled as follows:

Brain and Nerves by Mercury [and Uranus]

Mercury: respiratory/tremors, neuroses, insanity

Sun: heart (heart and spine disorders)/diseases of expansion and excess

Mars: Arteries (cuts, injuries and bruises as well as fevers and inflammations with redness and heat)/teeth/nails/hair/muscles

Saturn: Veins/skin/bones/skeleton/diseases of decline, collapse, wasting, blockages and contraction/poisonings

Venus: Kidneys/digestive system (disorders)

Jupiter: Liver (disorders)/diseases of expansion and excess

Venus and Mars: reproduction

Neptune and Uranus: endocrine system

Pluto: Testes

Moon: Ovaries/menstrual and mammary complaints and dropsies [fluid retention]

the Signs connected in this way with the body

Aries: Head and face, the eyes.

Taurus: neck, ears, throat, larynx, tonsils.

Gemini: arms, shoulders, muscles and bones in these, the lungs (incl. trachea/bronchi)/hands.

Cancer: Stomach, breasts, solar plexus, diaphragm, upper part of the liver.

Leo: heart, spine and spinal parts.

Virgo: intestines, alimentary canal, lower part of the liver.

Libra: kidneys, loins, appendix, lumbar vertebrae and the skin generally.

Scorpio: organs of reproduction, bladder, gall, colon and rectum.

Sagittarius: hips, thighs and the sciatic nerves.

Capricorn: knees, joints of the body and the hair.

Aquarius: lower leg (calves and ankles), the teeth and the circulation of the blood.

Pisces: feet and toes.

The Planets govern parts corresponding with the Signs they rule and in which they have their exaltation.

The physiological side, in relation to the Signs, is as follows :-

Aries: brain faculties/distribution of mental and physical energy (Headaches, fevers, neuralgia, eye troubles, eruptions and inflammations, wounds and accidents)/energies often in excess of the nervous and mental balance, and most ill-health has its origins in such things as violent exertion and outbursts of anger/should seek poise at all costs.

Taurus: Recuperative forces (diseases attacking the throat)/over-indulgence and too much comfort lie at the roots of most disorders, but there is also a tendency to brood over troubles which lends force to any passing ailments.

Gemini: breathing/things connected (bronchial complaints/Tb,/nerve diseases/pneumonia/pleurisy/asthma/anaemia/nervous reactions and restlessness, form the basis.

Cancer: Nutrition (digestive affections)/usually complaints originate in the emotions through some mental irritant, cause nervous reactions and general lessening of vitality. It has been said that 9 x out of 10 the Cancerian is hurt in health more by others than by himself.

Leo: Distribution of vital forces (bloodstream)/heart trouble/poor circulation and similar troubles/nearly all afflictions tend to arise from over-exertion of some kind.

Virgo: Processes of assimilation and absorption/digestive troubles and complaints to do with intestines generally/tendency to upset the digestive organs from nervous causes, producing acidity and other troubles.

Libra: liquid processes of the body/kidney affections and afflictions to the spine/troubles arise usually from nervous exhaustion of some kind..

Scorpio: Procreation and reproduction/diseases of the parts already mentioned as belonging to this  Sign/resistance breaks down through worrying and interaction of others upon the individual..

Sagittarius: senses, malady as studied through the nerve/gout/rheuma/sciatica/accidents/restlessness often causes the trouble; the folks under this Sign are peculiar to accidents and injuries.

Capricorn: Processes of preservation and reserve of energy/skin complaints and diseases affecting the parts of this sign/disease is frequently rooted in inhibitions.

Aquarius: circulation and eliminative processes/accidents to the ankles and complaints affecting that part of the body/varicose veins/blood poisoning and some nervous diseases/nervous causes, usually, based on the highly sensitive nature.

Pisces: perspiration and the lymphatic processes generally/influenza/colds/diseases accompanied by mucous discharges and similar complaints/over-heating of the mind with possibly fancied injuries from others, plus much sensitiveness physical and mental, form the basis for most complaints.

On Planetary Influences On Health:

"The Vital spirit hath its residence in the heart, and is dispersed from it by the Arteries; and is governed by the influence of the Sun. And it is to the body, as the Sun is to the Creation: as the heart is in the Microcosm, so is the Sun in the Megacosm: for as the Sun gives life, light, and motion to the Creation, so doth did heart to the body; therefore it is called Sol Corporis, as the Sun is called Cor Coeli, because their operations are similar.

Inimical and destructive to this virtue, are Saturn and Mars. The Herbs and Plants of Sol, wonderfully fortify it.

Natural] The natural faculty or virtue resides in the liver, and is generally governed by Jupiter, Quasi Juvans Pater; its office is to nourish the body, and is dispersed through the body by the veins.

From this are bred four particular humours, Blood, Choler, Flegm and Melancholy.

Blood is made of meat perfectly concocted, in quality hot and moist, governed by Jupiter It is by a third concoction transmuted into flesh, the superfluity of it into seed, and its receptacle is the veins, by which it is dispersed through the body.

Choler is made of meat more than perfectly concocted; and it is the spume or froth of blood: it clarifies all the humours, heats the body, nourishes the apprehension, as blood doth the judgment. It is in quality hot and dry; fortifies the attractive faculty, as blood doth the digestive; moves man to activity and valour: its receptacle is the gall, and it is under the influence of Mars.

Flegm is made of meat not perfectly digested; it fortifies the virtue expulsive, makes the body slippery, fit for ejection; it fortifies the brain by its consimilitude with it; yet it spoils apprehension by its antipathy to it. It qualifies choler, cools and moistens the heart thereby sustaining it, and the whole body, from the fiery effects which continual motion would produce. Its receptacle is the lungs, and is governed by Venus, some say by the Moon, perhaps it may be governed by them both, it is cold and moist in quality.

Melancholy is the sediment of blood, cold and dry in quality' fortifying the retentive faculty, and memory; makes men sober solid, and staid, fit for study; stays the unbridled toys of lustful blood, stays the wandering thoughts, and reduces' them home to the Centre: its receptacle is in the spleen,: and it is governed by Saturn.

Of all these humours blood is the chief, all the rest are superfluities of blood; yet are they necessary superfluities, for without any of them, man cannot live.

Namely; Choler is the fiery superfluities, Flegm, the Watery. Melancholy, the Earthly.'

On the one hand these Rulerships seem to be given as dogmas, on the other a certain logic can be perceived to underpin them. The characteristic features of the diseases or organs resonate with the features of the planets which rule them. Examples include the fluids ruled by the Moon or redness and heat by Mars. Thus, although the Rulerships are like fixed dogmas, they can be viewed as revealing an underlying logical pattern too.

In ancient times, knowledge of the specific and general effects of medicinal compounds on health was very poorly understood compared with today, and was often based on the shape, colour, taste and texture of the material, before they were actually used medicinally. This was often referred to as the "doctrine of correspondences" [or "doctrine of signatures"]: a system which assumed that the Almighty had inscribed in the plants of the earth secret signs and features whereby their medicinal virtues could be ascer-tained by Man. Examples include yellow flowering plants for liver com-plaints, red and peppery herbs for fevers and haemorrhages, etc.

For centuries, the medicinal qualities of a drug were decided by astrologi-cal considerations, such as reference to planetary rulers. For example, fruits, nuts and other nutritious or sweet-scented plants were deemed to be ruled by Venus; reddish and peppery plants by Mars; yellow or orange plants by Jupiter; dark, poisonous and bitter herbs were ruled by Saturn; silvery, white and watery [succulent] plants came under the Moon's rulership [see Culpeper].

"Paracelsus was also a firm believer in the doctrine of signatures, and in illustration of it explained every single part of St. John's Wort [Hypericum perforatum] in terms of this belief "...the holes in the leaves mean that this herb helps all inner and outer orifices of the skin...the blooms rot in the form of blood, a sign that it is good for wounds and should be used where flesh has to be treated." [Griggs, 1981, p.50]

Yet a surprising number of these herbal 'guesses' were apparently confirmed by the homeopathic provings (Chel [Yellow Poppy] for liver complaints/Euphr [Eyebright] for eye complaints/Pulmo  [Lungwort] for bronchitis)

Rejected by Hahnemann, also rejected a priori methods relying on chemistry, botany, signatures, astrology, or physics.

Most modern medical writers also regard all this astrology as bunk:

'Although early nineteenth century botanic medicine reveals little direct evidence of the 'doctrine of signatures' that had lain behind traditional herbalism, and that had expressed [as in the writings of Paracelsus] an interpenetrative holistic cosmology, indirect links are to be found in the literature's references to astrology, and in the pervasive quasi-hermetic references to vital force.' [Cooter, p.66]

'Newton was also a keen student of alchemy; and he left a remarkable manuscript on the prophecies of Daniel and on the Apocalypse, a history of creation, and some tracts.'

When asked by a Fellow of the Royal Society why he believed in astrology and other such arrant nonsense he is reputed to have retorted: 'Well, Sir, I have studied the matter, and you clearly have not!'.

The method of the medical astrologer was first to cast a chart for the patient's birth and another for the patient's disease or its approximate time of onset. From looking at these the astrologer could then determine any excess or deficient planetary energies which lay at the bottom of the problem. And a general prognosis could also be made at this stage. In effect the patient's problem is translated into astrological language and then its course and cure figured out from there.

Drugs used were also classified under different planets and so excess energies could be cooled and neutralised by employing an appropriate drug; likewise deficient energies could be boosted by employing a drug which was known to stimulate that organ or system into better functioning. Drugs used were mainly of botanic origin but some minerals were also employed. The whole system attempts to harmonise and regularise the body functions by addressing certain organs and systems which are not working correctly. It is very like Acupuncture, Ayurveda and Chinese herbal medicine in its overall approach, in which a similar 'harmonisation of functioning' is the central therapeutic objective.
