Psyche and Structure – Crystals and Minerals in Homeopathy by Peter L
Tumminello, Narayana Verlag reviewed by Vatsala Sperling.
Let us briefly meditate on the obvious. The earth itself and the
life-forms that exist here are composed of minerals in various physical states
– solids, liquids and gases, and various forms, namely metals, non-metals, pure
elements and their salts. We can conveniently conclude that a life-form is in fact
a life-force, enshrined in a castle made from the minerals. Once a life-force
exits, the material body, the castle made up of minerals, collapses upon itself
making the biblical proclamation, ‘from dust
to dust’, come true. Minerals are thus the unsung heroes, the very
foundation of the entire Nature and of all creation that we are able to
perceive.
Medicinal use of minerals for treatment of disease conditions goes way
back to Ayurveda, and in recent times, homeopathy has come up with a unique way
of unlocking the healing potential of minerals.
In this book, Psyche and structure – Crystals and Minerals in
Homeopathy, Peter Tumminello shines light on crystals as a source of remedies
and he explores these fascinating objects with the keen and sharp eye of a
gemologist and the scholarly mind of a homeopath. He has successfully brought
the best of both these diverse worlds into his book.
Gemology and mineralogy are a serious discipline of study and chemists
spend a lifetime mastering these subjects. Peter has dug deep into this
specialty and he has
come up with easy to understand descriptions of the physics and nature
of crystal systems. He is personally convinced of the vast, silent and powerful
instinctive intelligence at work behind these natural wonders (crystals) and as
an author, he is able to convince his readers too.
Peter’s inquiry is distilled into eight chapters that educate us about
cubic, tetragonal, hexagonal, trigonal, orthorhombic, monoclinic, triclinic and
amorphous crystal systems. Peter connects these systems and structures to the
various aspects of human psyche we routinely encounter in our clients. He
mentions that Michael Gienger,
a mineralogist and crystal healer, had proposed that each of the eight
classic crystal structures have affinity to specific lifestyles and unique
aspects of the human psyche. Because of this affinity, it is possible to
experience the practical application of this book. Once we understand and
assimilate this affinity, it would be quite easy for us
to listen to the life narrative of our clients, understand their
symptoms and how they resonate with any particular crystal structure. Each of
these eight chapters contains
a description of psyche, supplementary and positive themes, spiritual
dimensions, diseases at mental– physical – emotional levels, local symptoms and
generalities, and also case studies. The end result is that the healing powers
of the crystal – based remedies are now available to us.
I found the chapter devoted to differential diagnosis of crystal systems
very useful. It is quite likely that in our practice, we will encounter an
overlap between various aspects of psyche and the crystal system they resonate
with.
A full chapter is devoted to assessment of structure in daily practice
and Peter gives a list of questions we could ask during case-taking to get a
clear idea about the structure our clients represent. An appendix gives a list
of remedies made from the eight groups of crystal structures.
Over 40% of homeopathic remedies are made from the mineral kingdom.
[Anne Vervarcke]
Minerals get the following features assigned: the sensation of being
incomplete and the need to complete themselves. The feeling is that the person
is needing, lacking
or loosing something in order to be complete.
While this is correct is it not the whole story and it doesn’t belong to
the element only. As a matter of fact, the simple elements are rarely found on
earth.
What we dig up are mixtures of elements in the forms of ‘earth’,
crystals and stones.
While it is true the elements are the building blocks for all other
phenomena, they seldom appear in their pure unmixed form. The reason why we
prescribe them so much
is probably simply because we had something solid, scientific and
limited as the Periodic Table. It meant a great starting point to categorize
our homeopathic remedies
into groups and families.
But what is under our feet contains many more possibilities and we
should be able to distinguish between those subgroups with reliable and easy to
recognize indications.

The functions of minerals are deverse, but can be summarized as follows
(Fisher 1978/Blackmore Laboratories, 1980/Soloman & Davis, 1983/Guyton,

Structural:
A constituent of bone, teeth, connective tissue and cell membranes.
A stabiliser of large molecular structures.
Electrochemical:Regulation balance.
A stabiliser of gradients. of osmotic and cell membrane acid-base

Characteristics of the minerals. It falls apart into the same elements; there
is no communication with the environment and there is no time.
[Sankaran]
Central themes common to remedies of the
mineral kingdom are „structure” and „organization”, and the problems of mineral
remedies/personalities arise from a break
in this structure and organization, breaking in
relationships or failure in performance. As personalities they are very
systematic and tend to be highly organized.
Sankaran (1997a:229-232) the central theme of the mineral kingdom
revolves around structure and organization. “Mineral” personalities are often revealed as organized,
systematic and logical, with a predilection for facts and figures, and a
need for fixity in way of thinking. One would expect then that such
constitutions are more resistant
to placebo effects
Classifies mineral remedies into metals,
cations, anions, salts and acids.
Mineral concerns: existence and later
separation, identity, security and task, creativity and performance,
responsibility and finally disintegration and death.
Being attacked, developing strength, developing
fighting abilities and performance.
[Dr. R. Ullmann and Dr. Judyth Reichenberg-Ullman]
Very concerned with the structural components of life: home, family,
safety, security, and responsibility.
Has a sense of order, precision, organization, and detail. Being around
others who are disorganized and unstructured may drive you crazy.
Probably good with numbers and could do very well, like it or not, in a
career that is systematic, logical, and structured, like an engineer,
accountant, technician, scientist,
librarian, doctor, or nurse. More specific themes, including nurturance,
identity, security, relationships, creativity, and attack and defense will
determine which particular
mineral medicine is best for you.
[David Little]
Minerals are the foundation of the structure of the earth and all
organic living things on earth. So minerals inherent in a plant or animal
remedy deeply affect the nature of
the provings and clinical confirmations.
[Farrington]
Description of the animal remedies. "Medicines derived from the
animal kingdom act energetically and rapidly. They vary in intensity from the
fatal snakebite to coral/sponges etc./which are more or less modified by their
mineral constituents". The animal remedies in general are energetic and
rapid in their actions. The most violent are the animal
poison remedies taken from the Opidians (= snakes). On the opposite end
of the spectrum
Calc. usually listed with the mineral remedies.
This remedy is known for its deep slow action and its cold/torpid/slow
functions and stagnations rather than energy or violence represented by its
acute complementary
The high calcium content in the oyster shell is the responsible for the
mineral symptoms observed in this mollusk. Calc. only understood by studying
animal's marine habitat
and life cycles.
The Antipsoric Medicines
As a rule it was developed from their pure symptoms/that most of the
earths/alkalies and acids/as well as the neutral salts composed of
them/together with several of the
metals are psoric.
The similarity in nature of the leading antipsoric/Sulph. to Phos. and
other combustible substances from the vegetable and mineral kingdoms led to the
use of the latter and
some animal substances naturally followed them by analogy/in agreement
with experience.
H. was the first to study the similarity of the minerals to miasmic
states as well as their complementary relationships to the remedies of the 3
kingdoms.
This is so in the 3 cardinal antipsorics: Sulph. (mineral)/Calc. (Mollusk)
and Lyc. (Fern) which are complementaries.
These remedies have proven themselves to be more commonly used for the
effects of the venereal miasms with or without psora.
In the Principles and Art of Cure notes the following when discussing
the carbon family remedies.
Boenninghausen: all these have the characteristic carbon influence/even
though associated with another element. It may seem strange to the casual
student of materia medica to include Sep. in
this list/but to the homoeopathician Sep. is the animal carbon.
H. mentioned the importance of 'analogy' and 'experience' in studying
the relationships of remedies of the 3 kingdoms. The relationship of the
carbons to Sep. is one observation.
If homoeopaths work by analogy and experience the relationships within
homogenous families and the greater materia medica can be uncovered. This is
how the range of the provings is expanded and new potential symptoms and
clinical applications may be discovered.
[Roberts]
30 minerals on the antipsoric list of 33 are within the atomic weights
of the elements contained in the human organism.
The nutritional remedies act predominantly on the psoric and pseudo-psora Tb.
miasm. The only remedies in the antipsoric list that have an atomic weight
heavier then the body's constituents: Ba/Pt/Au. These remedies have proven
themselves to be more commonly used for the effects of the venereal miasms with
or without psora.
H. set the standard for the anti-venereal powers of the heavy elements
by Hg (= Mercury) as the cardinal remedy for the syphilitic miasm. Remedies
toxic to the human body: Ag/Au/Cd/Os/Ir/Hg/Pt/Pb/Rd/Nit-ac. are known for deep
destructive processes that mimic venereal diseases as well as many chronic
degenerative disorders. Nevertheless these trends only represent tendencies as
many of the nutritional minerals have multi-miasmic actions as do the heavier
elements.
The list of psoric symptoms in the Chronic Diseases (1828) is the miasm
theory in a seed state. In the introduction to Hempel’s translation of the
Organon/Hering confirms that H. introduced a new miasm called pseudo-psora. H.
divided the venereal diseases into sycosis and syphilis early in his career.
Later he also separated the symptoms of psora from those of pseudopsora. In the
first symptoms list in the Chronic Diseases (1828) H. unknowingly mixed the
symptoms of Psora with the Tb. miasma = H.’s Pseudopsora.
As H. gained experience/noticed that he was observing two distinct non
venereal miasms and began to reclassify their symptoms. He shared this
information with Hering.
H. told Boenninghausen that he was doing a detailed study of sycosis and
would share his new symptoms list when finished. Unfortunately H. was unable to
finish this work before he died 1843.
The following therapeutic hints are offered as a commentary on the
materia medica. The mineral family symptoms included are those observed by the
author in the clinic and confirmed in materia medica studies. The brackets ( )
contain examples of mineral families or remedies known for the symptoms
mentioned. I have not proposed any radical new concepts nor tried to develop
the themes beyond my practical experience. There are many interesting analogies
and correspondences to be drawn between the mineral characteristics and the
symptoms of the materia medica. Such insights often add greater understanding
but they should not replace provings and clinical confirmations. Perhaps as our
knowledge of the mineral world expands we can comment on this subject.
Therapeutic Hints
The minerals have a deep action on the metabolism and organic structures
of the human organism. The elemental remedies have the potential to produce
every disease known to the orthodox pathologist but each in their own characteristic
way. For this reason the homoeopath studies each elemental family and their
known relationships. In this quest we are assisted by the periodic table of the
elements and knowledge of chemistry.
Minerals and Constitutions
Many mineral remedies are similar to well known constitutional types.
James Kent once remarked on how a homoeopath begins to recognize certain
constitutional remedies by observation of their mind/body make up. This
collection of essential constitutional signs is then confirmed by the
characteristic symptoms.
"A great deal is
presented that can be seen by looking at the patient/so we say this looks like
a Nat-m. Experienced physicians learn to classify patients by the
appearance."
The physical constitution and mental temperament of many polychrest
minerals (Nat-m./Calc./Ferr-met./Phos./Ars. etc.) have well recorded
constitutional portraits. With experience the homoeopath recognizes many such
objective signs on first sight. Each mineral type is predisposed toward certain
diathetic constitutions and psychological traits.
The mineral remedies also have a close relationship to the Hippocratic
natural temperaments and the Mappa Mundi. For example: Nit-ac. suited to the
yellowish/brown/thin/dry/irritable/choleric temperaments that are angered
easily and hold grudges. Calc. suited to the
white/cold/sweaty/slow/flabby/leucophlegmatic temperament. Ferr-met. suited to
the reddish/pseudo plethoric sanguine temperament that appears vital but
underneath is pale/restless and weak. Ars. suited to the
blue-black/nervous/fastidious/nervous melancholic temperament.
Minerals and Miasms
The minerals have a deep action on the rational
spirit/intellect/intelligence and mind/memory (Geist). Known for gradual
onsets/long progressive actions and deep pathologies.
The minerals known for their multi-miasmic and the ability to treat
several layers without changes of remedies. The nutritional mineral remedies
have slow onsets/the heavy elements are insidious and more progressive and the
poisons are violent and destructive. The heavier the atomic weight the more
rapidly destructive the element is on the intellect and intelligence. The
nutritional minerals tend to treat psora and the pseudo psora while the heavier
metals are useful in removing the venereal miasms. These categories are not
exclusive as the minerals have multi miasmic powers.
The mineral remedies affect the organic structures of the human organism
corroding the neuro-endocrine system/organs/tissues and fluids. The mineral
complexion is discolored with various hues
(yellow/white/red/blue/brown/gray/etc.) showing deep seated dyscrasias leading
to cachexia (a mixture of sickly colors showing multi miasmic pathology). The
plants cause similar colors but are acute and brighter in hue while the animal
remedies reflect violent colors related to animal poisons/toxins and venoms.
The minerals corrupt the spirit/emotional
disposition/brain/nerves/organs/glands/blood/nutrition/digestion/tissues/fluids
and bones in a chronically progressive manner. The pains of the minerals are
miasmic/deep/progressive and increase over time until they become unbearable.
The psoric and pseudo-psoric remedies tend to be < in the day while the
venereal remedies < at night.
Slow Decline in Spirit/Intellect and
Intelligence
The minerals have a great power on the rational spirit/intellect and
intelligence (Geist). Their concentration progressively becomes more
difficult/their memory declines and they
feel dullness with prostration of mind
(Argentums/Ammoniums/Aurums/Bartyas/Calcareas/Kaliums/Mercuries/Natrums/Phosphates/Platina/Silicas/Zincs).
The minerals often
begin with much activity but they end in exhaustion
(Acids/Alumina/Arsenicum/Aurums/Ferrums/Murates/Nitrates/Phosphates/Sulphates).
When the minerals become aware
of their slow decline they try to hide it from others by trying harder
to prove themselves. This usually ends in total exhaustion and failure and in
some cases/a decline into
imbecility
(Acids/Argentums/Arsenicum/Bartyas/Calcareas/Carbons/Kaliums/Mercuries/Natrums/Phosphates/Silicas/Sulphates).
Need for Organization
and Structure - Conflict between Stability and Freedom
The mineral temperament tends to need stability/solid bonds/good
partnerships and desires organization and structure
(S-Block: Natrums/Kaliums/Magnesiums/Calcareas)
or they destroy organizations and structures to prove their independence
(P-Block:
Fluorides/Murates/Nitrates/Iodums/Phosphates/Sulphates). The combination of the
S and P block elements makes up a good number of polychrest remedies
with well known constitutions and temperamental portraits (Calc-c./Calc-f./Calc-m./Calc-i./Calc-p./Hep./Kali-b./Kali-p. Kali-i./Kali-s./Nat-c./Nat-m./Nat-p./Nat-s./Mag-c./
Mag-m./Mag-p./Mag-s.)
Some of these remedies reflect
being caught between the need for solid bonds and independence. In the
beginning they desire fulfilling relationships
and good partners/but as the
disappointments mount/they become more resentful and need to prove that they
can be independent. Some wish to have it both ways so they stay
in dysfunctional
relationships/although they wish for independence and do not make changes
rapidly.
Restlessness/Driven/Exhausted
The mineral remedies deeply affect the emotional disposition (Gemüt)
with irritability and anxiety mixed with fear and tendency toward sleeplessness
with anxious dreams.
The mineral temperament is restless/experiences deep anxieties and
gradually grows exhausted
(Argentums/Arsenicums/Calcareas/Cuprums/Ferrums/Iodum/Kaliums/ Mercuries/
Plumbum/Silicates/Sulphates/etc.). Their anxiety < in the evening sometimes
driving them from the bed at night
Argentums/Arsenicums/Bismuth/Carbons/Causticum/Ferrum/ Magnesium/Natrums). This
restlessness may be due to emotional as well as physical pains. In the
functional state their inner drive gives them strength but as they become more
neurotic it transforms into a restless/driven/obsessive compulsive personality.
This constant psychological strain leads toward exhaustion and eventual
collapse.
Repressed Emotions and
Fixed Personalities
Although the mineral temperament is quite intellectual they are affected
deeply by emotions which are repressed by the rational mind only to reappear as
compensation like hardness
(Ammoniums/Arsenicums/Cuprums/Kaliums/Natrums/Nitrates) or mildness (Alumina/Arsenicums/Aurum/Borax/Calcareas/Kaliums/Natrums/Nitrates/Phosphates/Platina/Plumbum/
Silica/Stannum/Sulphur/Zinc). The minerals are restless and driven and find it
difficult to adapt psychologically to new circumstances or make personal
changes. The presence of their shadowy emotions is apparent to others but they
think they are still in control of the situation. If this control is lost they
may become destructive and violent
(Ammoniums/Aurums/Calcareas/Carbons/Iodum/Kaliums/Natrums/Nitrates/Platina/Sulphates/Zinc/etc.).
Need for Recognition/Respect and
Appreciation
The minerals like to be seen as prominent members of their peer group or
family (Argentums/Arsenicums/Ferrum/Kaliums/Paladium/Platina/Sulphates)
although they have a difficult time in the office
(Graphites/Mercuries/Natrums/Nitrates/Sulphates) and the home
(Arsenicums/Calcareas/Kaliums/Nitrates). If they do not acquire their goals in
life they suffer as they wish to be looked up to by others (precious
metals-Argentums/Aurum/Palladium/Platina) and can be very ego centered
(Aurums/Causticum/Ferrum/Palladium/Platina/Silicates/Sulphates). A mineral
temperament is confident when healthy/offended when criticized/resentful when
hurt and destructive when unforgiving.
Trouble Resolving Conflicts and Feeling
Safe
The mineral temperament has a long memory for those with whom they find
fault and have trouble forgiving and forgetting past offenses
(Acids/Ammoniums/Aurums/Calcareas/Manganese/Natrums/Nitrates). If they do not
get what they think is right they feel betrayed and have a hard time resolving
conflicts. They worry and fear misfortune especially when they think their
security is threatened and become paranoid
(D-Block:
transition
elements/Manganese/Ferrum/Cobalt/Nickel/Cuprum/Zinc/Paladium/Platina/Argentum/Aurum/Mercury).
The mineral temperament has
delusions that
criminals/suspect individuals and bad people are about
(Alumina/Ammoniums/Carbons/Causticum/Ferrums/Mercuries/Natrums/Nitrates/Silicates/Strontium
and Sulphates).
They may project their fear and aversions on to certain persons/the
opposite or same sex/or different ethnic groups and religions.
Discontented and Dissatisfied with Self and Others
The minerals become deeply discontented/displeased and dissatisfied if
they perceive themselves as failures/disrespected/or miss attaining their
goals.
(Ammoniums/Antimonies/Calcareas/Cuprum/Kaliums/Mercuries/Natrums/Palladium/Platina/Silica/Stannum/Sulphates).
They tend to dominate domestic affairs which is carried out by either control
(Arsenicum/Ferrums/Kaliums and Natrums) or being over liberal with themselves
(Fluorides/Phosphorus/Nitrates and Sulphates). They are prone to holding others
to their own standards and tend to be critical in their opinions
(Alumina/Ammoniums/Arsenicum/Aurum/Bartyas/Bromium/Calcareas/Graphites/Kaliums/Mercuries/Phosphates/Platina
and Sulphates). If they can't control their environment they become
irritable/morose/cross/fretful/ill humor/peevish and quarrelsome causing them
to scold and lecture.
Withdrawal and Abandonment
If the minerals do not get their way they have a tendency not to talk
about the situation and would rather be alone
(Acids/Barytas/Carbons/Ferrums/Magnesiums/Natrums/Palladium/Phosphates/
Selenium/Stannum/Sulphates). If they do not get what they desire they have
delusions of being deserted/betrayed/abandoned and forsaken
(Argentums/Aurum/Carbons/Barytas/ Kaliums/Magnesiums/Natrums/Platina). The
mineral temperament has a tendency to withdrawal into their own 'element'. They
will fill their time with work or distractions to stay away from those they
consider a problem especially their family (Ammoniums/Aurums/Calcareas/Fluoric
Acid/Iodums/Kaliums/Mercuries/Natrums/Phosphates/Platina/Plumbum). They have
aversions to certain persons they have never seen or those who have offended
them in the past.
(Ammoniums/Aurum/Calcarea/Causticum/Natrums/Nitrates/Selenium/Stannum). The
constant decline of the spirit and emotional disposition coincides with
withdrawal from reality and the abandonment of all healthy relationships.
Ultimate withdrawal is suicide and the abandonment of life itself.
The Stages of Life
1st stage: The minerals have a great effect on babies/youths
and adolescents (times of great growth) (as well as the middle age when the
miasms begin to become more pathological).
They must be used carefully during old age due to their deep actions and
potential for unproductive aggravations. When the individual is in a functional
state/the mineral temperaments provide support to others and
are stable personalities in the community and home. They have brilliant
intellects and strong emotions and are often leaders among their peers. They
work hard yet know how to enjoy themselves and are often successful. They have
pride in their accomplishments and wish to be appreciated by people.
When the mineral temperament is placed under continual strain they
become more controlled/resisting to changes/have trouble adapting to stress.
2nd stage: is full of struggle/strife/contradictions as they fight to
regain their former identity. The more they attempt to control their
circumstances/the more they become anxious/frustrated and angry. As they become
less successful in enforcing control their outbursts become more violent.
3rd stage: begins when the mineral temperament realizes that their
intellect is degenerating causing loss of emotional control. This makes them
feel less confident and more fearful/paranoid and depressed. This leads toward
dark forebodings/feelings of failure/loss/gloom and melancholia (Alumina/Arsenicums/Ammoniums/Bromium/Calcareas/Carbons/Ferrums/Iridium
Kaliums/
Manganese/Mercuries/Murates/Natrums/Nitrates/Platina/Plumbum/Selenium/Stannums/Sulphates/Zincs).
4th stage: proceeds the exhaustion/melancholia and delusions make them
feel doomed (Arsenicum/Aurum/Kaliums/Natrums/Platina/Sulphates). As their
intellect continues to decline they feel they are losing their hold on life
which makes them think of suicide
(Alumina/Antimonies/Aurums/Calcareas/Mercuries/Natrums/Sulphates/Zinc). When
they lose control of their repressed subconscious material they may become
truly insane
(Antimonies/Arsenicums/Aurums/Barytas/Calcareas/Cuprums/Kaliums/Mercuries/Natrums/Phosphates/Platina/Sulphates/etc.).
The decline of the intellect (Geist) and the emotional disposition
(Gemüt) are progressive and slowly increasing undermining the very organic
structure of the brain and psyche. H. noted the difference between a miasmic
mental illness and a psychological disorder in the Organon. A miasmic mental
illness becomes < by psychological treatment while the emotional disorders
are >.
Severe crisis must be treated with acute intercurrents until ameliorated
and then followed by remedies for the fundamental causes associated with the
chronic miasms.
The above represent some of the main symptoms I have noticed running
through a great number of cases for which the mineral remedies were suited. Due
to their essential role in building organic tissue/the mineral remedies are
closely related to inherited constitutions/temperaments/miasms/predispositions.
They are useful in deeply complex miasmic diseases confounded by suppression
and drug toxicity. The relationship of the minerals to complementary remedies
within the plant/mineral/animal kingdoms is an essential study. The homoeopath
often finds that a family of homogeneous remedies suits most of the
circumstance and symptoms which arise during the course of treating a long
lasting chronic disease. This includes the acute intercurrents/the anti-miasmic
genus remedies/the chronic intercurrents and the constitutional remedies found
among the three kingdoms. The homoeopathician must learn when and how to apply
all these remedies.

Remedy Pictures, Development of
"If you can cure everyone, you don't have to develop your knowledge."
Introduction
Regularly, people ask me how I came to the ideas that I have explained
in my books and seminars. Where is the information coming from about remedies,
stages and series? What is the logic behind it? To what extent does it
follow the rules and ideas presented by Hahnemann and in which aspects
does it depart from that? Brita Gudjons asked to write an article about it.
Questions of Brita Gudjons were:
1. How you found out about the similarities of the elements and their
compounds.
2. How you started your idea and theory and proved the facts.
3. How you continued to set up the characters of the known and less
known elements (like the Lanthanides)
4. How you manage to find the right remedy for your patients, like what is
the special in your anamnestic set-up.
5. What can you recommend doctors to do if they want to follow your
system and ideas.
Fluorine as example
I think the best way to explain things is by following an example. The
primary remedy pictures are often showing only the negative sides, often in
such a way that it is a caricature of the whole picture. It takes time and
effort to find out what is behind all the strange and peculiar expressions, to
find out what is the essence or problem of a remedy. In this case I will
discuss Fluorine and its compounds as an example of how the ideas and themes
are developed and brought to an essence.
The Fluorine compounds known in the past were Calcium fluoratum and
Fluoricum acidum. In the physical realm they were known to have many
destructive (syphilitic) symptoms. In the mind we see the fear of poverty in
calcium fluoratum and as typical symptoms in Fluoricum acidum the adulterous
behaviour . It is about sex and money. Another expression would be "sex,
drugs and rock and roll". This picture shows Fluorine in a quite negative
way.
Fluorine in Homeopathy and Minerals
In homeopathy and Minerals, the above picture was mostly repeated. Money
and sex were the main themes. Added to that were glamour and glitter in the
form of cars, clothes and jewels. This was an extension of the money aspect,
with a desire to have money and a fear to have poverty. Added to that was also
the hard superficial quality of Fluorine. This came from the nature of
fluorine, which is used in the body for the enamel of the teeth. The enamel is
hard and smooth and things don't adhere easily to it. The same quality is also
found in Teflon, the anti-stick of pans, which is polytetrafluoroethylene, or
polyfluoretheen. All the hydrogens in this chemical are replaced by fluorine
atoms. The physical quality of Fluorine of not making contact, not being
attached is reflected in the psychological behaviour of superficial contacts,
easy sex, adulterous behavior that was known for Fluoricum acidum. When the
superficial quality is exaggerated it comes even to psychopathy,
a lack of empathy. This can lead to hardness. This picture of fluorine
was confirmed in cases were fluorine compounds acted well. It was shown that it
could be extended to unknown remedies like Magnesium fluoratum, Kali fluoratum,
Natrum fluoratum and Barium fluoratum, a good confirmation of the themes. So
the picture of the Fluorine element was extended, but it was still quite
unclear were it came from, what is the origin of it.
Fluorine in Homeopathy and the Elements
In homeopathy and the Elements The picture of Fluorine was further
developed by it's place in the periodic system: column 17 called Stage 17, row
2 called the Carbon series.
The themes of these 2 are:
Carbon series: Individual, Person, I, Value, Meaning, Self-worth,
Ethics: Good and Bad, Body, Life, Lust, Possessions, Hero , I weakness , Magic,
Myths, Child.
Stage 17: Exit, Letting go, Holding on, Loose,
Demanding, Climax, Condemning , Banned, Fleeing.
The combination of those two classes leads to :
Group analysis
Letting go of values: immoral.
Letting go of values: breaking taboos.
Holding on to self-worth: recognition.
Holding on to the self: glamour.
Demanding self-worth.
The end of the self.
Feeling of emptiness in the self.
Wanting to get a lot out of life.
Holding on to possessions.
Condemning physical goods: glitter, money, sex.
Taking everything that is of value.
Letting go of property: gambling.
Giving away possessions.
Holding on to the physical: sex.
Taking in order to prove self-worth: sex.
A demanding and aggressive person: hard.
Letting go of values: psychopathic.
Letting go of the essence: superficial.
Letting go of the personality, giving up.
A fleeting personality.
Letting go of the ego: the hero.
The demanding borderline: narcissist.
Letting the body go: lust, passion for life.
It turned out that the basic themes of sex and money were general themes
of the Carbon series. The sex is the expression of the vital energy and the
desire have physical contact, the experience the sense of touch. The money is
an expression of having the desire to survive, to have money for food, clothing
and housing, to be able to pay a doctor when needed. We see the fear of poverty
also in other remedies of the Carbon series, in Oxygen and the oxydatum like
Silicea, Arsenicum album and Alumina, we see it in the Carbonicums. So the
theme of money was generalised over the Carbon series, but it also became clear
that the basic need behind it was survival, a fear a death. The Carbon series
strongly has the identification with the body and thus the fear to die when the
body dies.
The money theme in Fluorine is colour by Stage 17 which makes it come to
a climax. The fear of losing the money is at its maximum, there is a fear to
loose their money any moment, it is almost over. They have the feeling that
they need money fast, as life can be over any moment in Stage 17. So they have
a tendency to take (stage 17) what they need, they have a tendency to steal and
gamble. Here we see the immoral qualities of Fluorine, they let go ( Stage 17)
the moral values (CS).
The aspect of value and meaning, morality, is typical fro the Carbon
series. This has the meaning of wanting to be of value oneself, one not only
just wants to be, but also wants to be good. They want to be seen by their
parents as good, so that they won't leave them alone. In Fluorine this aspect
of morality is often lost. They have the feeling that they cannot be good, that
they loose their goodness and will be seen as bad. This goes together with
their immoral quality in the sense of "when I am bad anyhow, it doesn't
matter if I do bad deeds or not".
In the Elements also the positive side of Fluorine came to the front.
besides being a bad guy, they can also be the hero, the hero that offers
himself to rescue the princess from the dragon. They can be the dragon, but
also the prince. It can be the prostitute who offers herself for others. The
highest aspect of fluorine is the to give themselves away and see that their
body can be given without any problem. They let go of the idea of their body
being them.
So in Elements the picture of Fluorine became more full, deeper and also
the positive sides arose.
Fluorine in Secret Lanthanides
The picture of Fluorine in Secret Lanthanides is in essence not very
different from that in Elements, but in practice other themes became more
prominent, making the picture more precise. Basic for Fluorine is the feeling
of being rejected (Stage 17) as a child (Carbon series). This can be in the situation of
unwanted children, or children having lost their parents. It gives them the
feeling of being abandoned (Stage 17) by life (Carbon series), by God (Carbon series).
Very typical expression for them turned out to be "I have to do it alone
in life", "There is no-one who will take care of me when I need
it" or "I can only trust myself". They feel very alone basically
and that is where the hardness comes from. They feel alone in the world and
cannot trust anyone.
So fluorine people don't have to be immoral, criminal, prostitutes and
so on. They can be very nice and moral people, but with they feeling that they
have to do it alone in the world. The criminal aspect is just a primitive and
caricatural aspect of Fluorine. It is just an expression, although very
typical, but isn't needed to prescribe a fluorine combination.
Fluorine in society
Recently I heard of a homeopath prescribing for children in an
orphanage. She prescribed many remedies known for orphans like Magnesium
carbonicum and Natrium muriaticum.
But for 50% of the orphans she needed Fluoricum acidum. It is very
typical: totally (hydrogen) rejected (Stage 17) and abandoned (Stage 17)
children (Carbon series).
A year ago I read a very nice book of Steven Levitt
"Freaconomics". Chapter 4 is: The controversial role legalized
abortion has played in reducing crime. Levitt explored this topic in an earlier
paper entitled "The Impact of Legalized Abortion on Crime." The
dramatic rise in crime in the sixties and seventies in the United States and
the even more spectacular decline in the early nineties. Many explanations for
the decline were proposed by sociologist such as more policy, higher penalties
and better social care, but the author brought it back to the legalisation of
abortion in 1973 in the United States. He showed that in the few states where
the legalisation was 3 years earlier, the decline in crime rate also came 3
years earlier. He also showed that the decline was especially the result of the
decline in crime of man between 17 and 20. His conclusion was that the
legalisation resulted in less unwanted and together with that deprived
children. It is a big confirmation for the fluorine theme of rejected and
unwanted children.

Introduction
Regularly, people ask me how I came to the ideas that I have explained
in my books and seminars. Where is the information coming from about remedies, stages
and series? What is the logic behind it? To what extent does it
follow the rules and ideas presented by Hahnemann and in which aspects
does it depart from that? Brita Gudjons asked to write an article about it.
Questions of Brita Gudjons were:
1. How you found out about the similarities of the elements and their
compounds.
2. How you started your idea and theory and proved the facts.
3. How you continued to set up the characters of the known and less
known elements (like the Lanthanides)
4. How you manage to find the right remedy for your patients, like what
is the special in your anamnestic set-up.
5. What can you recommend doctors to do if they want to follow your
system and ideas.
Lanthanides
The development of the picture of the Lanthanides needed another tool.
As they were completely unknown in homeopathy I started with doing provings of
them. I did a proving of all of them as a metal, except for Europium
as an oxydatum, as Europium is too reactive to be potentiesd as a metal.
The form I choose was that of meditation provings, as they can be done quite
fast and can give good hints of the remedy. I did them on my own for
reasons of ease. In those provings I got hints which I then used in
prescribing in cases. The cases made the pictures of the remedies more full and
precise.
Another starting point was the class of the Lanthanides, that of the
Gold series, as they are part of it.
So gradually the themes became more clear. The physical qualities of the
Lanthanides also added to it. They have strong electric and magnetic qualities
and are used electro-magnetic equipment. They are also used in a lot of video
equipment like colour televisions and LCD screen, lasers and optical camera's.
They give colour to the screens. Here we see the connection with the visual
theme of the Gold series and the connection with the eyes.
Gradually it became clear that much of the diseases were auto-immune.
The immune system as a control system (Gold series) was out of order. There was
a confusion between what was self and not self. Mentally this is expressed
as a desire to go their own way. The power theme of the Gold series is
specialised in the Lanthanides as a desire to have power over themselves, to be
in control of their own life. This central issue of the Lanthanides was also
expressed in the provings, but it only became clear as a central and
unavoidable them in the clinical case. The logic of the similarity with the
auto-immune system made the picture a whole, a rounded picture.
Development of Remedy pictures
The above shows that I use many aspects in the development of remedy
pictures. Of course there is first the literature, the knowledge of homeopathy
in the form Materia Medica and repertories. Then there are provings that have
been in the past and recently and provings that I have done myself, but
the provings are for me mere hints, I don't see them as providing definite
pictures. The form of the provings is for me likewise not so essential as the
result
is not definite at all. So I tend to do easy provings like dream
provings and meditation provings. And my experience is that they often give
very valuable and reliable results. But one has to sort out what is reliable
and what is just accidental rubbish.
Very essential for the development are the clinical cases. The proof of
the pudding is in the eating. Patients can tell you often very precisely what a
remedy does, what it can cure. They can you the essential difference between
before and after the remedy, especially when the remedy is a very deep
acting one.
I have learned most of the remedies from my patients. In my experience
the Materia Medica and repertories are very often very superficial, expressing
symptoms that hardly have any differential value. Of course one has to be
careful here too in deducing the remedy picture from cured cases. One
has to sort out those cases which are just palliation. One has to sort out the
symptoms in cured cases that were coming from another problem, another remedy,
but the essence of a cured case is often very reliable.
Another source is knowledge of the remedy. The physical qualities of a
substance often have an expression in the remedy picture. The translation of
those qualities into health and disease symptoms, into mental and emotional
problems can be quite difficult. It is a symbolic language, but in the
end is has to make sense. Like the use of the Lanthanides in light and colour
equipment is reflected in eye and vision symptoms physically and view and
vision symptoms mentally. The name and cultural use of a remedy is part of the
knowledge of a remedy too and can be used also. The mythology can be used as I
have done with the similarity between the Lanthanides and the works of
Hercules, or the voyage of Odysseus.
There is a strange phenomenon in homeopathy that knowledge outside of
homeopathy was almost completely discarded. As if the substance and the remedy
picture had nothing to do with each other. Most homeopaths didn't even know
what the remedies were, what they were made from. It arose out of paragragh 21
of the Organon, where Hahnemann states that symptoms can only be deduced from
provings. I have shown (Dogmatism in homeopathy) that Hahnemann is incorrect in
this, but a big part of the homeopathic community still sticks to this statement.
One of the problems is that it sets homeopathy apart from the other
sciences. It makes homeopathy as a science completely estranged from the rest
of science, which is a contradiction in itself.
A very important source of information is classification. Remedies
belong to classes and as such share qualities. This is so in physics,
chemistry, botany, zoology and all sciences. As I have argued in
"Homeopathy and Classifications" and "Homeopathy and
Science" classifications are essential for science. Science doesn't even
exist without classifications, as language is impossible without
classification. Classification give logic to essences and symptoms, they bring
them into perspective, make them understandable. And they make things
predictable, in our case remedy pictures. Classification has helped me
enormously in the development of homeopathic knowledge. Without it I wouldn't
produced one tenth of what it brought me now.
I know it is also attacked by many homeopaths as not being homeopathy,
not being "Classical homeopathy", but I cannot understand how someone
who presents himself as scientific can be opposed to classifications. It is for
me a fundamental contradiction.
